A devastating flood has destroyed several houses in Gusau, Zamfara State after a heavy downpour on Sunday, July 15 evening.
According to reports, the heavy rain that persisted for over an hour had caused havoc in some areas of the State capital as residents were seen packing out personal effects from their houses.
Additionally, several roads in Gengeri Megamu area were flooded with water, making it very hard for motorists to pass through it.
A resident in the area, Alhaji Malami, had disclosed that the downpour was terrible, as many residents had lost their properties due to the heavy rainfall.
While criticising the State government for not taking proper measures to prevent what happened, he also blamed the residents for building their houses on waterways, knowing fully well that the area was dangerous.
Lastly, he had called on the State government to urgently craft strategies that could prevent flooding in the area.
Several parties are to be blamed for what happened, but the most blame is apportioned to the State government that is in charge of the lives and properties of residents in its state.
What is the Zamfara state government really doing to curb the flooding during the rainy season?
One cannot help but wonder when the government will sit up and take charge of mitigating this annual loss of lives and properties during the rainy season. Until when does the government draw the line?
Drafting and erecting a proper drainage in those critical areas will go a long way towards reducing this problem.
