The Flying Eagles defeated Uganda 1-0 to go to the semifinals of the ongoing African U-20 Nations Cup in Egypt, despite playing possibly the worst game of any Nigerian national U-20 squad. Nigeria’s triumph also secured them a spot at the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia in 2023.

Nigeria was predicted to defeat Uganda, which by all accounts was a lower-ranked team in the world of football than the Flying Eagles. But because the Hippos play a well-coordinated form of the game, observers who had followed this rivalry from the start were cautious of them. The Flying Eagles’ game-winning own goal, scored by Ibrahim Juma in the 41st minute, proved to be the difference between the two teams, and it was the Ugandans’ undoing since they first treated Nigeria with more respect than they merited.

Ibrahim Muhammad nearly gave the Flying Eagles the first goal in the third minute, but his fierce shot was deflected and eventually cleared. The Flying Eagles, who turned to awkward long balls in the face of a tactically superior opponent, came close to opening scores.

As Nigeria’s Chijioke Aniagboso, the game’s most valuable player for the Flying Eagles, stopped Ivan Irinimbabazi’s forceful header from a corner kick in the eighth minute, it was Uganda’s time to lament a missed opportunity.

As Juma turned in the goal, which bounced off the post and redirected off his knee, the game’s tactics and style were eroding.

An improved Flying Eagles team challenged the East Africans in the second half, but much as in the first, their failure to produce clear chances as they approached the Ugandans’ box was their downfall.

Muhammad had a golden opportunity to extend the lead three minutes into the second half after slipping past two defenders, but he missed it, and the East Africans were able to clear their lines.

With the victory, Nigeria joined Senegal in the U-20 AFCON and FIFA U-20 World Cup semifinals.

Earlier in the day, the Senegalese defeated the Benin Republic by a similar margin.
