The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has written a complaint letter to the Federation’s Head of Service, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, requesting that action be taken against the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Ambassador Ibrahim Adamu Lamuwa, for alleged sexual harassment of a married female staff member, Mrs Simisola Fajemirokun.
The letter was sent to Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, the Head of Service of the Federation.
What they’re saying
“I am forced to write to notify you of a formal complaint against the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Ibrahim Adamu Lamuwa on charges of sexual harassment.”
“Given the seriousness of the situation, I believe it is essential to bring it to your attention and request that you handle it appropriately.
“A copy of the complaint I got via email is attached. I would also like to reassure you that I am still available to help you in any way that you need to fulfil your obligations. Alkassim Abdulkadir, the Foreign Affairs Minister’s Special Advisor for Media and Communications Strategy, confirmed the claim when he was asked about it by merely saying, “It’s true.”
Why this matters
Involving a superior like the Permanent Secretary can worsen the situation due to the power imbalance.Addressing the issue appropriately sets a precedent of non-tolerance for such behavior within the Ministry and can encourage future victims to come forward.
Final Thoughts
This situation brings sexual harassment in the workplace to light. It’s important to note that these are allegations at this point, and Ambassador Lamuwa is presumed innocent. However, the Foreign Minister’s swift action ensures a proper investigation can take place.
