Two attorneys representing Donald Trump in a federal documents case abruptly quit on Friday, following the indictment of the former U.S. president on charges of illegally retaining classified documents, obstruction, and other offenses.
Concurrently, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s former military valet, Walt Nauta, also faced charges alongside Trump. Nauta had joined Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort subsequent to his service in the Trump White House.
This unexpected development, involving lawyers John Rowley and Jim Trusty, could lead to further legal complications as Trump is scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday for the case of the documents.
Trump stated on social media that he has enlisted the services of white-collar defence attorney Todd Blanche. The indictment of a former U.S. president on federal charges is an unprecedented occurrence in American history and arises at a time when Trump is considered the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in the upcoming year.
According to a source familiar with the matter, Trump faces seven criminal counts related to mishandling sensitive government materials that he took with him upon leaving the White House in January 2021.
His court appearance in Florida is scheduled for Tuesday, a day before his 77th birthday. These cases would not prevent Trump from campaigning or assuming office if he were to win the presidential election in November 2024. Legal experts assert that there would be no basis to block his inauguration, even in the event of a conviction resulting in imprisonment.
