Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains steadfast in his commitment to implementing the Supreme Court’s verdict, despite its unfavourable outcome. The state Commissioner for Information, Joseph Johnson, made this declaration on Monday, emphasizing that Fubara is dedicated to governance and stability.
Fubara Accuses Assembly of Obstructing Implementation
The state commissioner also lamented the role of the state assembly in hindering the implementation of the Supreme Court judgement. Johnson claimed that despite Fubara’s commitment to implementing the judgement, the state assembly failed to give the governor the chance to do so. He accused the State assembly of obstructing the full implementation of the judgement.
State Assembly Accuses Fubara of Misconduct
However, the Rivers State House of Assembly sees things differently. Rivers state lawmakers have issued an impeachment notice against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, accusing them of gross misconduct. Speaker Martin Amaewhule, in a strongly worded letter, alleged that the governor violated constitutional provisions by appointing commissioners and other officials without legislative approval. Lawmakers argue that these actions undermine democratic principles and disregard the rule of law.
Supreme Court Verdict Sparks New Crisis
The political turmoil in Rivers deepened after the Supreme Court’s ruling, which lawmakers claim Fubara is obstructing. One of their major grievances is that the governor has allegedly refused to present the 2025 state budget to the Assembly, delaying key government functions.
Political Battle Lines Drawn
Despite the growing tensions, Fubara’s camp insists he remains focused on governance and fulfilling his mandate while respecting the law. But with the impeachment process now in motion, the battle lines in Rivers politics have been drawn.
Will Fubara survive this political storm, or is the Assembly determined to remove him? The coming days will reveal the fate of Rivers State’s leadership.
