Coco Gauff came back in a magnificent way to got the better of world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the 2025 French Open final. She won her second Grand Slam title 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday at Roland Garros.
21-year-old American, who was runner-up after losing to Iga Swiatek in the 2022 final, displayed a great deal of calmness after losing a marathon opening set of 77 minutes. Gauff trumped Sabalenka’s inconsistency and 70 unforced errors, thus taking the next two sets and finishing the match after two hours and 38 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier.
“I didn’t think I could,” said Gauff, referring to her emotional loss during three years ago, “I was lying to myself that I could… but now I’m just happy to be here.”
Sabalenka, who is looking for her third Grand Slam crown and first French Open, led early but was struggling with the windy conditions. The Belarusian is now on the losing side of two major finals in a row, after her Australian Open stumble in January.
Gauff’s victory puts her ahead 6-5 in their head-to-head and is the first women’s Slam final between the top two seeds since 2018. The American’s mental fortitude again proved to be the key on the grandest of stages.
