A Gender equality bill sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi, has scaled through the second reading in the Senate.
The bill was originally introduced in 2021 by the senator, however, she was asked to withdraw the bill, after some of her colleagues contended that it was against their socio-cultural beliefs and religion, she was asked to cut out those specific aspects complained about, and do wider research as to the issue.
The bill has been extended and renamed, “Gender and Equality Opportunities Bill” providing for not only the elimination of violence against women, but also against Persons With Disabilities. She argued that if the bill is passed into law, it’ll give women the opportunities to work and attain their goals, seeing that there were a lot of societal barricades preventing women from fulfilling their goals
Some of the demands stated in the Bill include: Women being given some specific seats in the National Assembly, and also being granted indigene-ship of their husband state after five years of marriage.
