More than 20 students at the Islamic Senior High School, Kumasi have been admitted to a hospital after police officials attempted to break them up. The casualties were among the students allegedly jamming up the Abrepo Junction-Barekese road with their protestations. The students were demonstrating against cars repeatedly knocking down pedestrians including some students.
A recent accident has hospitalized one of the high school teachers and this triggered the current protests. Local reports have confirmed the incident, reporting that officers were in the area to maintain law and order. This was after the protest had caused heavy traffic congestion for more than an hour.
Observers of the protest disclosed that police officers had to use tear gas in other to disperse the students demonstrating. This allegedly resulted in body wounds in several students while attempting to flee the scene of the tear gas. Several parents who heard of the news had to come in and check on their children. It has been noted that some students have remained unconscious while others have been unstable since after the tear gas shooting by the police.
Ghana Police Officials have released a statement disclosing that the Inspector General of Police would be going to Kumasi, to assess the situation himself. Police officers have confessed that some of their personnel were also hospitalized. However, no explanations were given to ascertain the reason why some of the students were unconscious at the time of this report. Police officials have said that they would give an update as soon as investigations began.
