Google’s parent company has announced a new usage record for Search in response to Argentina’s thrilling comeback win over Egypt at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following Enzo Fernández’s winner in stoppage time that sends the Argentines into the next round of the tournament, Google Senior Vice President for Knowledge and Information Nick Fox shared a statement via social media to that effect. “Google Search broke all prior usage records and saw its highest usage in history right after Argentina scored their winning goal,” Fox stated, with Search Vice President Robby Stein also confirming an all-time high on the platform.

While Google did not publish exact usage statistics for the record-breaking Search instance or explain exactly how the figure was computed, it comes after an earlier pronouncement by Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai that queries for Search had topped records in Q1 2026.
The dramatic Round of 16 contest in which Argentina came from behind to overturn Egypt’s two-goal advantage before a late header from Fernández sealed the deal to set up a quarterfinal encounter against the Swiss demonstrates the potential for the world’s largest sport to dominate the digital world.
Previously, the technology giant recorded its peak Google Search traffic in its history during the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
