Google Settles Racial Bias Lawsuit for $28 Million

Google has agreed to pay $28 million (£21.5 million) to settle a lawsuit alleging that white and Asian employees received better pay and career opportunities than their Hispanic, Latino, Native American, and other ethnic counterparts. The settlement, which received preliminary approval from Judge Charles Adams of the Santa Clara County Superior Court in California, resolves claims of systemic racial bias within the tech giant.

While Google confirmed it had “reached a resolution,” the company denied the allegations, stating it remains committed to fair pay and hiring practices.

Lawsuit Allegations: Pay Disparities and Discrimination

The lawsuit, filed in 2021 by former Google employee Ana Cantu, claimed that workers from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds were consistently placed in lower-paying roles and job levels compared to their white and Asian colleagues. The case relied on a leaked internal document that allegedly revealed disparities in compensation for similar work.

Cantu’s lawyers argued that Google’s practice of basing starting salaries on prior pay reinforced historical race and ethnicity-based inequities. The class action lawsuit covered at least 6,632 employees who worked at Google between February 15, 2018, and December 31, 2024.

Cathy Coble, one of the attorneys representing the plaintiffs, commended the “bravery of both the diverse and ally Googlers who self-reported their pay and leaked that data to the media.” She emphasized that pay inequity often remains hidden without collective action from employees.

“Suspected pay inequity is too easily concealed without this kind of collective action from employees,” Coble said.

Google Denies Allegations, Commits to Fair Practices

Despite the settlement, Google has denied any wrongdoing. A company spokesperson told the BBC, “We reached a resolution, but continue to disagree with the allegations that we treated anyone differently, and remain committed to paying, hiring, and levelling all employees fairly.”

The tech giant’s stance comes amid a broader trend of companies scaling back diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

Google is among several major US firms, including Meta, Amazon, Pepsi, McDonald’s, and Walmart, that have rolled back their DEI programs in recent years. This shift coincides with political pressure from former President Donald Trump and his allies, who have criticized DEI policies as divisive.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has ordered government agencies and contractors to eliminate DEI initiatives, further complicating efforts to address systemic inequities in the workplace.

Moving Forward; What’s Next for Google?

The $28 million settlement marks a significant step toward addressing allegations of racial bias at Google. While the company denies the claims, the case highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in pay practices.

As debates over DEI initiatives continue, the outcome of this lawsuit may inspire further action to ensure fair treatment and opportunities for employees of all backgrounds.
