German authorities issued a warning on Sunday urging travelers to refrain from using the Hamburg airport due to a hostage situation. The airport, located in the northern part of the city, has remained closed to passengers since Saturday night, following an incident where an armed individual breached an airport gate with a vehicle and discharged a firearm twice into the air.
The man, aged 35, allegedly had his 4-year-old daughter with him, whom he had reportedly taken forcefully from the mother, potentially amid a custody dispute that had been previously reported to authorities by the man’s wife.
According to police reports, a psychologist has been engaged in negotiations with the individual for several hours. While the situation remains tense, there is no immediate indication that any other individuals could be harmed, as all airport passengers have been safely evacuated, as per police statements.
