He Walked Out of Prison After 43 Years — and Straight Into ICE Custody

Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam finally stepped out of prison after 43 years, breathing what should have been his first air of freedom, only to be arrested again by ICE. The man had been wrongfully convicted of murder in 1983, spent nearly his entire life behind bars, got exonerated, and then got snatched by immigration officers like freedom was never meant for him.

Freedom That Lasted Minutes

Imagine being innocent, spending four decades behind bars, and finally being told, “You’re free.” Only for immigration officers to be waiting at the gate. That’s what happened to Vedam. He had barely stepped out when ICE officers moved in, claiming a decades-old deportation order. The man didn’t even make it home, he went straight from a state prison to a federal detention center. His family was waiting to welcome him with food and joy, what they got instead was another heartbreak.

He Walked Out of Prison After 43 Years — and Straight Into ICE Custody

From Wrongful Conviction to Wrongful Detention

Vedam’s case is one of the worst examples of how the justice system fails twice. In the early 1980s, he was accused of killing his friend, a murder later proven not to be his doing after hidden evidence came to light. The Pennsylvania court vacated his conviction, admitted the system got it wrong, and threw out the case. You’d think that would be the end. But then ICE stepped in, claiming he had an old deportation order tied to a drug charge from his teenage years.

He’s now being held again, this time not as a murderer, but as an immigrant “with a criminal record.” The irony is painful. How can a man who was proven innocent still be treated like a criminal?

A Man America Should Be Apologizing To

The man has spent more than forty years teaching, helping other inmates get degrees, and rebuilding what little he could inside prison walls. He was supposed to finally get a chance to live. Instead, the government is preparing to send him to India, a country he left when he was nine months old. He doesn’t know anyone there. His whole family lives in the U.S. Yet America, the land of freedom, still wants to kick him out.

This captures the frustration of a man who thought justice had finally smiled at him, only to find out it still had one more cruel joke to play.

ICE says they’re “just doing their job,” following the law. But it’s clear this is another example of how bureaucracy crushes humanity. Vedam is not a threat, he’s a man trying to start over after losing his life to a mistake that wasn’t his. Deporting him now feels like adding insult to injury, a quiet reminder that some people are never really allowed to be free, no matter what a court says.
