The House of Representatives requested INEC for the deadline to be extended. The Independent National Electoral Commission set the deadline for the end of the registration of new voters for the 30th of June, 2022.
A member of the House, Benjamin Kalu, moved a motion titled ‘Need for the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the deadline of continuous voters registration, deploy additional staff and voters registration machine across the country”
Kalu reminded the commission about their declaration made some weeks ago “42 percent of the voter registration recorded are invalid with about 20 million unclaimed PVCs”. The House of Representatives also added that they have received calls from concerned citizens and civil societies urging INEC to extend the voters’ registration deadline to accommodate more eligible voters desiring to register.
Furthermore, he said, “if nothing is done to improve the shortage of voter registration and extend the deadline, millions of Nigerians would be disenfranchised, thus jeopardizing the integrity of 2023 general elections”.
