Maverick singer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has taken a swipe at Nigerian Christian clerics, accusing the majority of prioritising financial gain over moral responsibility and courage.

Speaking on a recent episode of the KAA Truths podcast, the outspoken entertainer criticised what he described as the silence of many church leaders amid the country’s worsening economic hardship and insecurity. He alleged that several pastors have chosen to align with corrupt politicians rather than challenge injustice, thereby taking advantage of the masses.

According to Charly Boy, many Nigerian clerics have turned religion into a commercial enterprise, losing sight of their duty to speak truth to power.

“All the pastors I know of in Nigeria, 99 per cent of them are useless. It is just a business that they are running,” he declared.

He further distanced himself from what he described as blind religious devotion, stressing that he does not share the same mindset as many Nigerians when it comes to faith and leadership.

“I may live in Nigeria but Nigeria does not live in me. I don’t believe like you. I don’t want to think like you people. I’m not in the same class with you people. I come from a different space and time,” he added.

Charly Boy’s remarks have since sparked conversations online, with mixed reactions from religious leaders, followers, and social commentators.
