Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday, aged 34. This is only weeks after he mutually agreed on an exit with Serie A giants Juventus, where he had spent seven successful seasons.
Szczesny had one year remaining on his contract with Juventus and was reportedly linked with the moves to Italian side Monza and Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr before his decision to hang up the gloves. In his career, Szczesny won three Serie A titles along with three Coppa Italia trophies with Juventus, hence he has been engraved in Italian football.
Szczesny developed himself against Brentford and Roma at the Premier League club Arsenal, before then joining Juventus in 2017 and gradually becoming a mainstay between the posts.
On the big stage of Poland, the Polish international represented his nation 84 times.
Szczesny took to Instagram to get a little nostalgic: “I left Warsaw-my hometown-in June of 2006 to join Arsenal with one dream: to make a living out of football. Everything that I have, everything that I am, I owe to the beautiful game of football.”
This really seals the deal on a near twenty-year-long career.
