Abba Yusuf, the Kano State Governor, has justified demolishing several structures in the state upon assuming office on May 29.
The Emir of Kano while reiterating his administration’s commitment to the demolitions had remarked that demolitions had been to recover public properties.
He had made this remark while hosting the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and the members of the emirate council.
Governor Yusuf noted that the demolition exercise is done to recover public properties.
According to a statement released by Hisham Habib, the governor’s spokesperson, emphasis had been made, in reclaiming public properties that had been acquired illicitly by individuals and friends of the past administration.
The Governor had meanwhile expressed gratitude to the Emir and the emirate council for their first courtesy visit to him.
Governor Yusuf’s explanation is an unsatisfactory one, to say the least. Unless he believes that he governs lackwits, there is no justified reason that will explain why several valuable structures, some of them costing millions of Naira, were demolished immediately he resumed office. Political pundits have reasoned that the demolitions had come on account of ‘perceived’ enmity between Ganduje ( the immediate former governor) and Governor Yusuf.
