While the world reels from the confirmed death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during Operation Epic Fury, a different kind of firestorm has ignited on Capitol Hill. A social media exchange between Republican Representative Nancy Mace and Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar has gone viral, turning a global tragedy into a sharp personal and political brawl.

The clash began when Mace (R-SC) posted a seemingly sympathetic message directed at her colleagues, Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), shortly after news of Khamenei’s death broke. “My heart goes out to Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib tonight. Sending them thoughts and prayers,” Mace wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“Stay Off Social Media”: Omar Hits Back

The post was widely interpreted by critics as a sarcastic “troll,” implying that the two Muslim congresswomen would be grieving the loss of the Iranian leader, a common, though unsubstantiated, trope used by their political opponents.

Ilhan Omar did not hold back in her response, delivering a stinging rebuttal that questioned Mace’s sobriety and professional conduct. “Hope you aren’t drunk and took your staff’s advice,” Omar replied. “Rashida and I don’t know this man and feel confident he didn’t care about us.”

Omar went further, making specific allegations about Mace’s behavior behind the scenes. “Please restrain from drinking too much as you have been warned from your staff and stay off social media when you are drunk. I pray in his holy month you find peace and respect for yourself,” Omar concluded, referencing the ongoing Islamic holy month.

A Long-Standing Feud

The exchange marks a new low in the relationship between Mace and the “Squad” members. Mace has frequently used her platform to paint Omar and Tlaib as radical sympathizers of Middle Eastern regimes, while Omar has consistently accused Mace of performative politics and “Islamophobic” dog-whistling.

The timing of the post is particularly sensitive. With Operation Epic Fury plunging the Middle East into chaos and global oil markets in a tailspin, many political analysts are criticizing the exchange as a “distraction” from the gravity of the military strikes in Tehran. “While our forces are in harm’s way, we see our representatives bickering like teenagers over drinking habits,” one political commentator noted.

Chaos in the Capital

Neither representative’s office has issued a formal statement following the viral thread, but the internet has already picked sides. Supporters of Mace argue she was highlighting “priorities,” while supporters of Omar praise her for calling out what they see as a “disrespectful and baseless” insinuation. As the smoke continues to rise over Tehran, the toxic atmosphere in Washington D.C. shows no signs of clearing.
