“Impeach Fubara and face our wrath!” This was the fiery warning issued by the Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), Eastern Zone, to former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, over an alleged impeachment plot against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The group vowed to resist any attempt to remove the governor, insisting that those behind the plan would face serious consequences.
At a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, IYC Eastern Zone Chairman, Ibiso Harry, directly accused Wike of orchestrating the political crisis in Rivers State. He alleged that Wike, through his allies, Martin Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and Tony Okocha was actively working to destabilize Fubara’s government.
Harry claimed that the real cause of the crisis was Fubara’s refusal to hand over control of the state’s resources to Wike. He also criticized the recent Supreme Court ruling freezing Rivers’ allocation, alleging that Wike’s allies manipulated the decision to weaken Fubara’s administration.
Ijaw Youths Warn Wike: Stop Meddling in Rivers Politics
The Ijaw Youth Congress did not mince words as they blamed Wike for the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers. They accused him of attempting to control the state from Abuja, warning that Rivers’ resources belong to its people not to a single individual.
“We have patiently watched the political crisis orchestrated by Barr. Nyesom Wike and Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule since Governor Sim Fubara took office two years ago. The main issue here is Wike’s desperation to control the state’s funds, both from the federal allocation and internally generated revenue. But Governor Fubara has stood his ground, refusing to hand over Rivers’ money,” Harry declared.
He also criticized the judicial interference, arguing that a court decision freezing the state’s funds would cripple the economy and harm civil servants.
Fubara Must Complete Two Terms – Ijaw Youths Stand Firm
The IYC made it clear that Fubara must complete two terms, just like his predecessors. The group warned that any attempt to remove him before 2027 would be met with fierce resistance.
“We shall resist any attempt to impeach Governor Fubara until he completes his two tenures of eight years, just as those before him did. If the planners of this impeachment do not abandon their evil plot, they should be ready to face the consequences,” Harry warned.
He also commended President Bola Tinubu for stepping into the crisis but urged him to do more to stabilize the state.
Ijaw Youths Remind Wike of Their Loyalty, Declare Support for Fubara
The Chairman Emeritus of IYC, Ibim Ibiwari, revealed that the group had conducted independent investigations, which confirmed a grand plot to remove Governor Fubara. He pointed to statements made by Tony Okocha and Lolo Opuene, a lawmaker from Kula, as clear evidence of the impeachment agenda.
Ibiwari reminded Wike of their past loyalty, stating that Ijaw youths risked their lives to secure his re-election. Now, he said, they are willing to make the same sacrifice for Fubara.
“We risked our lives to secure Wike’s re-election, but today, we stand with Fubara. We will not allow political mercenaries to overthrow the governor,” Ibiwari declared.
The IYC called on all ethnic groups in Rivers State to resist any move to destabilize Fubara’s administration. They urged political actors to embrace dialogue instead of resorting to desperate power struggles.
With tensions rising and political factions hardening their positions, the battle for Rivers State is far from over. However, one thing is clear—the Ijaw Youth Congress will not stand by and watch their governor fall. So their warning to Wike is clear, “Impeach Fubara and face our wrath!”
