Spain’s victory in the 2023 Women’s World Cup was a triumph celebrated across the globe. The remarkable journey of these resilient women, conquering opponents from various countries, should have been the focus. However, a cloud of controversy descended upon their victory due to a disgraceful incident involving their coach.
Renowned Spanish football icon Andres Iniesta took to social media on Sunday to voice his disappointment. He expressed his sadness as a person, a father of daughters, a husband, and a footballer, regarding the events surrounding the Spanish women’s national team and football as a whole. Iniesta, who had secured Spain’s first World Cup title with his goal against the Netherlands in 2010, decried the actions that have marred the glory of winning a World Cup.
The controversy stemmed from Luis Rubiales, the suspended president of the Spanish football federation, who engaged in a forced kiss with Jenni Hermoso after the women’s World Cup final. This act drew widespread criticism and raised questions about the conduct of football leadership. Rubiales defended the kiss as “mutual, euphoric, and consensual,” but Hermoso vehemently denied giving her consent for the kiss.
In a powerful stance, Hermoso and 80 other players from Spain, including the entire World Cup squad, announced their refusal to play for the national team until there’s a change in the leadership of the Spanish football federation. Even a significant portion of the women’s team coaching staff resigned in protest.
FIFA swiftly intervened, suspending Rubiales from his role for 90 days, while the Spanish government also considered further actions. The controversy had transcended football, with critics like American actress Natalie Portman standing with Hermoso.
Andres Iniesta articulated his sympathy for the players, emphasizing that their achievements deserved recognition and appreciation rather than being overshadowed by the behavior of a president who clung to his position despite the damage to the country’s image.
As Spain’s government sought to extend Rubiales’ suspension, the country’s administrative court for sport convened to address potential sanctions against him for “very serious offenses,” including possible “abuse of authority” and actions detrimental to sporting dignity.
The fate of Rubiales’ leadership hangs in the balance, prompting the question: Should someone with such behavior ever hold a leadership role again?
