Nigerian artist Muyeez, whose real name is Moshood Abdulmuiz, has finally decided to break his silence, announcing he’s terminating his contract with Dapper Music & Entertainment Limited. It seems like another day, another artist calling out the same label. Yesterday, it was Shallipopi, today it’s Muyeez. And if there’s one thing that’s clear, it’s that Dapper Music & Entertainment seems to have perfected the art of fattening its pockets while draining its artists dry.
In a post on Instagram, Muyeez gave an explanation, detailing how his dream of making it in the music industry was turned into a nightmare under the management of the label. According to him, he was exploited, neglected, and ultimately betrayed by those he trusted. “What should have been a dream come true turned into a nightmare,” he shared, emphasizing his feelings of disillusionment and disappointment.
Muyeez claims he released three EPs in a single month—EPs that topped the charts. Despite the success, he received no royalties for his work. Not a single penny. He described how his hard work and passion were met with indifference, leaving him to wonder if his voice really mattered at all. Imagine putting in all that effort and getting nothing in return.
Adding salt to the wound, Muyeez alleged that he was a minor when he signed his contract. He trusted Dapper Music to guide him, only to be burdened with unrealistic demands and unfulfilled promises. This mirrors the complaints of fellow artist Shallipopi, who recently made a public exit from the same label, citing financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, and exploitative contracts.
Young artists are being fed dreams of fame and fortune, only to be exploited by the very labels that should be helping them grow. My advice remains the same: Before signing anything, get a lawyer.
These labels know exactly how to target artists who are desperate for money and fame, and sadly, many fall for it. So, young artist, hear this loud and clear: Don’t let them use you.
