Israel has expanded evacuation orders in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, forcing tens of thousands of Palestinian residents and displaced families to leave in the dead of night amid tank shelling and explosions. The Israeli military stated that the evacuation was necessary to target Hamas militants, who allegedly used these areas to stage attacks and fire rockets. On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike hit a school in Gaza City where displaced Palestinians were sheltering, resulting in at least 90 deaths according to the civil defense service. This attack has sparked yet another international outcry against isreal for the increased humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Israeli military claimed the strike was aimed at a Hamas and Islamic Jihad command post, but these groups rejected the accusation, calling it a pretext. The military reported that 19 militants were killed in the strike.
Massive Evacuation and Humanitarian Crisis
In Khan Younis, evacuation orders now cover central, eastern, and western districts, marking one of the largest evacuation directives in the 10-month-long conflict. Residents were informed through social media and text messages, urging them to move to newly established humanitarian zones as quickly as possible, leaving Palestinians with little time to flee the zone. Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA commenting on the situation, noted that many people are fleeing with minimal belongings to overcrowded shelters.
He said “Some are only able to carry their children with them, some carry their whole lives in one small bag. They are going to overcrowded places where shelters are already overflowing with families. They have lost everything and need everything,”
Ongoing Military Actions
The Israeli military reported striking around 30 Hamas military targets in the past 24 hours, including missile launch posts and weapons storage facilities. The Islamic Jihad’s armed wing responded with mortar bombs against Israeli forces in eastern Khan Younis. Later, an airstrike near the Khan Younis market killed four Palestinians and injured several others.
Rising Death Toll
Nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive since October, with the number of casualties increasing daily, according to Gaza health officials. While Israel claims at least a third of the fatalities are militants, Gaza health officials emphasize that most casualties are civilians. Israel has reported 329 soldiers killed in Gaza. The conflict began after Hamas fighters attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages.
Civilians’ Struggle
The latest evacuation orders have forced tens of thousands to flee their homes and seek refuge in already crowded areas like Mawasi and Deir Al-Balah. Many, such as Zaki Mohammad from western Khan Younis, described the repeated displacements as exhausting. Mohammad expressed a bleak outlook, noting that people are fleeing from one dangerous situation to another with no safe place in sight.
The Gaza war remains as intense as ever, especially with the recent expansion of evacuation orders and the escalation of military operations. Palestinians are bearing the brunt of these attacks, with significant civilian casualties and a deepening humanitarian crisis. The international community emphasizes the need to protect civilians in conflict zones to ensure they are not targeted by military actions. However, the rising death toll raises questions about Israel’s commitment to civilian protection. The international community holds Israel responsible for a significant portion of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and has called for further scrutiny of these actions. As the conflict continues, providing adequate humanitarian aid and ensuring civilian safety remain pressing challenges.
