Italian Foreign Minister’s Dire Warning: Military Solution in Niger Could Unleash Catastrophic Migration Crisis

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has expressed deep concern over a potential military solution to the ongoing coup situation in Niger. He warned that such an approach could lead to a disastrous outcome, potentially triggering a new wave of migration crisis. The situation has drawn the attention of the West African bloc ECOWAS, which has been engaged in negotiations with the coup leaders who took control last month. ECOWAS has emphasized its readiness to deploy troops in order to restore constitutional order if diplomatic efforts prove ineffective.

Tajani, arriving in Toledo, Spain for a meeting of EU foreign ministers, stressed the need for a diplomatic resolution, advocating for a step-by-step approach. The Niger crisis loomed large over the gathering, with Hassoumi Massoudou, the ousted government’s foreign minister, and Omar Touray, head of the ECOWAS Commission, taking center stage.

Tajani also expressed concern over the potential fallout of a military intervention, particularly in relation to migration. He drew parallels with Sudan, where conflict had spurred an increase in people leaving the country. The foreign minister lauded a proposal from Algeria, suggesting a six-month transition period led by a civilian, as a positive step toward resolving the crisis.

The recent developments have cast a shadow over the diplomatic assembly of European Union foreign ministers in Toledo, Spain. The primary focus of the meeting is to formulate a robust response to the instability in Niger and the abrupt seizure of power by military forces in Gabon. The turmoil in West and Central Africa has lent a solemn tone to the discussions in Toledo, where the gravity of the situation is underscored by the presence of Hassoumi Massoudou and Omar Touray.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell addressed the media, highlighting the profound uncertainty brought about by the recent coup in Niger. The situation has raised serious concerns about regional stability in an already fragile area.
