The Department of State Services, (DSS) has concisely stated that it would not condone protests from individuals and groups on June 12, the Democracy Day in Nigeria.
The DSS, had in a statement released on the eve of Tuesday night, warned all those planning to carry out such protests, to refrain from participating in any violent or disruptive actions.
In a statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Peter Afunanya, the agency disclosed that it received intelligence on plans that had been made to incite violence and disrupt public order.
What They’re Saying
The DSS’ statement read in part: “These protests are designed with sinister objectives to coincide with the Democracy Day Celebration.
“While citizens may have the rights of assembly and expression, such freedoms should not be used to undermine public safety and national security. The determination by some non-state actors to incite mass disaffection through demonstrations that may turn violent will not be tolerated.”
