Kenya Finance Bill 2024: Utomi Urges Ruto to Prioritize Human Rights

Professor Pat Utomi, a distinguished scholar and renowned expert in political economy, has called upon His Excellency President William Ruto of Kenya to prioritize human rights and fiscal responsibility in the implementation of the Finance Bill 2024. Utomi’s admonition comes at a critical juncture in Kenya’s history, as the nation navigates the complexities of economic development and social cohesion.

In a statement released recently, Professor Utomi emphasized the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to economic growth, one that prioritizes social justice, human dignity, and inclusive development. He cautioned that resorting to violence against citizens is a manifestation of weakness rather than strength, and urged President Ruto to engage in constructive dialogue with stakeholders to foster a culture of tolerance and understanding.

Utomi’s exhortation to President Ruto is particularly pertinent, given the ongoing debates surrounding the Finance Bill 2024. The Bill, which seeks to reform Kenya’s tax regime and enhance revenue collection, has been the subject of intense scrutiny and debate among stakeholders. While the government has argued that the Bill is necessary to enhance economic growth and development, critics have expressed concerns about its potential impact on human rights and social welfare.

Professor Utomi’s call for a human rights-based approach to economic development is consistent with his long-standing commitment to promoting good governance, social justice, and sustainable development in Africa.

His expertise in political economy and his experience as a former gubernatorial candidate in Delta State, Nigeria, lend credibility to his views on this matter.
