Lagos Cholera Outbreak: Death Toll Reaches 24, Suspected Cases Now 417

Prof Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health has announced that the death toll from the cholera outbreak has risen to 24, in the state alone.

Abayomi had made this disclosure via a post on his Instagram handle on Friday.

The State commissioner also confirmed 35 cases out of the 417 suspected cases across the State LGAs.

Abayomi additionally said the situation report as of June 19, 2024, revealed that there were, “417 suspected cases, 35 confirmed cases, and 24 recorded deaths.”

To this effect, he cautioned residents and advised them to ensure they kept a good personal and environmental hygiene.

He had warned, “Let’s adhere strictly to personal and environmental hygiene. Let’s stay safe #ForAGreaterLagos”

The confirmed cases were reported from Agege, Badagry, Ikeja, Mushin, Ajeromi-Ifelofun, Epe, Ikorodu, Ojo, Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Amuwo-Odofin, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos Island, Shomolu, Apapa, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos mainland, and Surulere.

Just recently, on Thursday, June 21, the World Health Organisation announced a surge in cholera in many regions of the world, with about 195,000 cases and over 1,900 deaths reported in 24 countries since 2024 began.

According to the WHO, the Eastern Mediterranean Region reported the highest number of cases. This was followed by the African Region, the Region of the Americas, the Southeast Asia Region, and the European Region.
