Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of multiple statutory and financial infractions. He is replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa has been accused of several controversial financial dealings.
Barely a month ago, he was accused of spending a whooping sum of 17 billion naira to fix a gate leading to the Assembly.
Mrs Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1 and a former chief whip of the House is now the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly while, Mojeed Fatai has been appointed the new Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Why It Matters
Obasa’s impeachment underlines the growing concern about accountability and transparency in governance, particularly in Lagos State. The Lagos State House of Assembly plays a pivotal role in shaping policies and legislation that affect millions of residents.
Allegations of financial mismanagement not only erode public trust but also raise broader questions about the effectiveness of oversight mechanisms in the state’s political structure. The leadership transition may signal efforts to restore credibility and ensure ethical governance, setting a precedent for other political leaders across the country.
