Recent events highlight a disturbing trend in Nigerian security agencies, particularly regarding the misuse of their authority and firearms. In a shocking incident reported by The PUNCH, three personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were apprehended by the Nigeria Police for the shooting of two students from the Senior Secondary School, Life Camp. This tragedy unfolded in the areas of Jabi and Gwarinpa within the Federal Capital Territory.

The victims, currently undergoing treatment at Gwarinpa Hospital, suffered at the hands of NSCDC operatives, sparking outrage among their fellow high school students. The angered students retaliated by vandalizing three NSCDC patrol vehicles in protest against the assault on their peers.

This distressing occurrence took place around 11:20 am on a Wednesday, adding to a series of incidents involving security forces overstepping their boundaries. The Lagos police shooting of Bolanle Raheem remains fresh in memory, despite the conviction and subsequent sentencing to death of the accused police officer.

In response to this incident, SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police spokesperson, acknowledged the situation, confirming the intervention of law enforcement to restore calm. She reported that the injured students are currently receiving medical attention and assured the initiation of an investigation into the matter by CP Haruna Garba.

Surprisingly, the FCT Command of the NSCDC has remained silent on the matter, with the spokesperson, Comfort Okomanyi, citing unavailability but promising to seek updates from the command for further information.

To prevent such misuse of authority and firearms by security agents, several measures could be adopted:

  • Training and Education: Implement thorough and continuous training programs for security personnel, emphasizing the responsible use of firearms and the ethical execution of their duties.
  • Strict Adherence to Protocols: Enforce strict adherence to rules and regulations governing the use of force and firearms, ensuring officers understand the circumstances under which lethal force is justifiable.
  • Accountability and Oversight: Establish robust mechanisms for accountability and oversight within security agencies, including transparent investigations into reported incidents and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
  • Community Engagement: Foster positive relationships between security forces and communities through dialogue, engagement, and building trust to prevent misunderstandings that may escalate into violent confrontations.
  • Regular Psychological Assessments: Conduct regular mental health and psychological assessments for officers to identify and address potential issues that may lead to misuse of authority or firearms, some of these security agents are stressed, like really stressed, regular psychological checks is very important.

These steps, if rigorously implemented, can contribute significantly to curbing the misuse of authority and firearms by security agents, promoting a safer and more responsible law enforcement environment.
