The members of the House of Representatives from the Niger Delta region on Monday urged the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, to resign after her false claims that Bayelsa State was not among the 10 most flooded states in Nigeria.
The minister had additionally, named Jigawa as the state worst hit by flooding in 2022.
However, while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Monday on behalf of the other lawmakers, Fredrick Agbedi stated that the minister’s statement was insensitive to the plight of the people of Niger Delta who had lost loved ones and property to the flood.
“We call on the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development to honorably resign her appointment as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. On failing to do this, President Buhari should relieve her of her appointment immediately,” Agbedi had said heatedly.
Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency yesterday cautioned several states, saying that they would experience another great flooding crisis in 2023 if required precautions were not taken by the government at all levels.
The NEMA Director-General, Mustapha Mohammed, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Special Duties to defend his agency’s 2023 budget, had said that early warning directives to the states had been ignored.
