Nigerians can breathe a sigh of relief! The national power grid, which went down on Thursday afternoon, has been successfully brought back online by 10 pm that same evening. This means electricity should be flowing normally again across the country.
What Caused the Blackout?
The problem started with a drop in the amount of electricity being generated, mainly due to a lack of gas for power plants. This caused a teeter-totter effect on the power grid, making it unstable. Things got worse when a generator at the Egbin power station suddenly shut down, adding to the problem and causing the entire grid to collapse.
The good news is that the grid is now stable and working properly. It’s currently delivering all the available electricity to homes and businesses throughout Nigeria.

Working to Keep the Lights On
The company that runs the grid, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), is working hard to prevent these outages from happening again. They’re tackling challenges within their control and working with other electricity providers to minimize disruptions and get the lights back on quickly when problems do occur.
This is the second nationwide blackout this year, following another one in February. Nigerians also faced several outages in 2023. Hopefully, with continued efforts, these blackouts will become less frequent in the future.
