Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has lauded Trent Alexander-Arnold following the decision of the defender to leave the club and move to Real Madrid.
Finally, after number of months of speculations, we come to the point when Alexander-Arnold has decided not to extend his contract at Anfield and has opted to seek a new adventure in Spain. While initially forecasting a free transfer from Liverpool, Madrid, who wanted the right-back to be part of the FIFA Club World Cup, gave a small fee to Liverpool.
On the occasion of an interview given to the Liverpool Echo, Werner reminisces with some understanding and sentiment about the situation: “We respect the fact that Trent has moved on,” he said. “We are grateful to him for the sum of his talents. He showed me a photo of him as a seven-year-old in the academy, and I will always love what he has done for the club.”
Werner, indeed, thought of the fans’ disappointment but emphasized the legacy of Alexander-Arnold’s career as a main point. “I’ll never forget that corner against Barcelona in 2019. It was a pure genius,” he continued. “To see him deliver a 30-yard pass for goal creation was a happiness.”
Following a record summer rebuild, Liverpool have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen thus ushering in a new era at Anfield.
