Liverpool have announced that they will be paying their respects to Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, at a pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Sunday. The brothers had their lives taken in a tragic car accident that occurred in Zamora, Spain last Thursday.
The fixture at Deepdale will be the Reds’ first appearance since the heartbreaking news. To pay tribute to Jota, a deeply moving version of the club’s anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone, will be presented before the game. Preston are also going to place a wreath in front of the away section, besides both sides will observe the phenomenon of a minute’s silence and wear the black armbands.
Preston North End has allocated an exceptional issue of the match programme to the memory of the now late Portuguese footballer, besides the digital expressions of the gratitude to be exhibited all through the ground.
Jota, who was from Wolves and came to Liverpool in 2020, played 182 matches for the Reds and scored 65 goals and gave 26 assists. He was the major force behind the club’s recent triumphs, including 2024–25 Premier League title reign, 2 EFL Cups, and the 2021–22 FA Cup.
His latest game was when Portugal defeated Spain in the UEFA Nations League last month. The Sunday’s friendly is going to be an emotional occasion of remembrance for the Liverpool family.
