Manchester United broke their nine-game winless streak at Anfield in the Premier League as they moved two points behind the defending champions.
Ruben Amorim’s team could not have had a better start, going ahead within two minutes when Bruno Fernandes played a through ball to Amad Diallo who, after a one-touch pass to Bryan Mbeumo, fired a cool shot into the net past Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Reds were very upset with the referee that the game continued while Alexis Mac Allister was down injured but the goal was allowed to stand.
During the first half Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo almost scored as his shot hit the post, while Fernandes also saw his shot hit the post in this very exciting first half. On several occasions, United’s speed on the counter-attack was very effective against the Reds, however, just after the break, the woodwork came to the rescue once more as Gakpo was again denied.
Finally, the Dutchman brought Liverpool back into the game as he made a near post finish from Chiesa’s cross in the 73rd minute, thus preparing the ground for a nail-biting last part of the game. Nevertheless, it was Maguire who scored the winning goal for United as he belted home Fernandes’ accurate delivery in the 84th minute.
This result ensured back-to-back league wins for United, whereas Liverpool have now lost their fourth game in a row in all competitions.
