Making The SpongeBob Inspired Krabby Patty Bun

If you’ve ever watched a single episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, you probably know all about the legendary Krabby Patty. Seriously, who hasn’t seen that mouthwatering burger and thought, “Wow, I want to try that!”? In today’s world, it’s hard to scroll through your feed without coming across a reference picture or a video of this iconic treat, at least it’s that way for me. Seeing a well put together burger like the Krabby Patty, gets you wondering how that perfect bun is made.

I mean, sure, grabbing a burger patty, some lettuce, and tomatoes is easy, but how do you whip up that fluffy and golden bun? If you’re curious about how to achieve that Krabby Patty look at home, you’re in luck! In this article, I’ll be working you through a step-by-step guide on making the ultimate burger bun.

Ingredients

For each recipe, there are ingredients that are non-negotiable, you just have to have them as key ingredients.

Essential
  • 4 cups of flour (all-purpose or bread flour)
  • 2 ½ teaspoons of yeast
  • 2 ½ tbspSugar
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of milk or water
  • ¼ cup of melted butter or oil
  • 1 large egg
Optional
  • Honey or maple syrup
  • Spices (e.g., garlic powder, onion powder)
  • Seeds (e.g., sesame, poppy)

Equipment Used

  • A mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • A stand mixer or hand mixer
  • A dough scraper
  • A baking sheet
  • A parchment paper

Process

Preparing the Dough: Mix bread flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix them properly and make a little hole in the center of the dry mix. In the hole, pour in a cup of warm milk, melted butter, and an egg. Mix it all together until a dough starts to form.

Remove the dough and place it on an already cleaned surface covered with flour. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it’s nice and smooth. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle a bit more flour, but don’t add too much flour. Oil a bowl, cover it and let it double in size.

Shaping the Buns: Sprinkle flour on a clean surface and place the dough. Cut the dough into about 8 equal pieces or more. Roll each piece into a ball using your hands. Place parchment paper on the baking sheet, and place the dough balls on the sheet. Be sure to leave some space between the dough balls to allow them to rise again. Cover the shaped buns and allow it to rise for another 30-45 minutes.

Baking the Buns: Preheat the oven while your buns rise. Whisk together 1 egg and a tablespoon of water, and apply it all over the tops of the buns to make them shiny. Put the baking sheet in the oven and bake until the buns are golden brown. Take the buns out of the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before slicing.
