The Malian army had during the weekend said it discovered a mass grave in Kidal, a northeastern town recently recovered from Tuareg rebels.
The army had revealed that the discovery was made Thursday during a sting operation without providing much details.
The armed forces had also revealed that it was carrying out investigations to “fish out those responsible and bring them to justice.”
On November 14, Mali’s army retook Kidal, a Tuareg separatist stronghold that had since been out of the central government’s control since 2014.
The town was retaken after officers from the UN Mission in Mali (Minusma) left their camp in Kidal October 31 as part of the agreement to withdraw from the country by the year’s end.
Meanwhile, infighting between the Tuareg groups and the army have recommenced, with the separatist group regularly accusing the army and their associates from the Russian mercenary group Wagner of committing atrocities against civilians.
