Manchester City completed their second-widest margin of victory this league season and their 21st win in 22 Premier League meetings with newly promoted opposition with a 6-0 thrashing of Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Ipswich began brightly; City academy graduate Liam Delap came close but was thwarted by Joško Gvardiol’s block. City quickly established themselves, with Phil Foden finishing off a Kevin De Bruyne cross in the 27th minute and opening the floodgates.
Three minutes later, Foden took on provider duties, latching onto Mateo Kovačić’s through-ball and finishing with precision. Foden wouldn’t stop tormenting Ipswich, netting his second before the half was over via another assist from De Bruyne, putting City in charge 3-0.
After their collapse at home to Brentford midweek, City made sure there would be no repeat. Jérémy Doku’s deflected shot had already added a third when, moments later, the Belgian created the fifth goal for Erling Haaland, just days after the striker secured a new long-term contract. James McAtee, a substitute, completed the rout, heading in Kovačić’s cross to make it 6-0.
City’s clinical performance evoked memories of their peak under Pep Guardiola, leaving Ipswich reeling from their joint-heaviest defeat in the Premier League this century. On the ball and going forward, the champions will be hoping to use this as a springboard for their next fixtures.
