Ruben Amorim has confirmed Manchester United activated the one-year extension in Harry Maguire’s contract, adding the defender will not depart on a free transfer this summer.
Maguire, who was also about to enter the final six months of his deal, had previously spoken of being optimistic that he and United were close to agreeing a lengthier extension. But United have acted quickly to tie him down while negotiations continue.
Speaking before United’s Premier League meeting with Liverpool, Amorim stressed Maguire’s value to the team.
“I told him he needs to improve on the pitch and as a captain,” Amorim said after the match. “Sometimes we are short on leaders in the team and he is one. “We are pleased to have him stay.”
Maguire, 31, has bounced back this season after a period in which he fell out of favor under previous management. United are hunting a top finish in the campaign and his leadership and defensive contributions continue to be invaluable.
Amorim also gave an update on Amad Diallo’s contract situation, stating that the young forward is ”close” to a new deal. United have an option to extend his contract by a year if they deem it appropriate, just as they do with Maguire.
