In the world of football, it’s no secret that Manchester United has lost its luster since the legendary Alex Ferguson departed in 2013. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, to say the least. Last season, they thought salvation had arrived in the form of Erik Ten Hag. The club briefly blazed like a wildfire, but it appears someone doused it with a bucket of cold water.
However, this weekend, the Red Devils experienced a glimmer of hope. Bruno Fernandes, their captain, swooped in with a stoppage-time goal, saving Erik ten Hag from an imminent crisis, as they secured a narrow 1-0 win against Fulham.
For most of the game, it seemed like United was about to add another mediocre performance to their collection. Their creativity was nowhere to be found at Craven Cottage, but Fernandes came to the rescue with his thunderous strike from outside the box.
To put this victory into perspective, it catapulted United to a heady sixth place in the Premier League, just five points away from the top four.
Now, the controversy – Ten Hag wasn’t shy about airing his grievances. He scolded Marcus Rashford for attending a nightclub birthday bash just after their dismal 3-0 loss to Manchester City. Unacceptable, he called it. However, he insisted that Rashford’s absence from the squad wasn’t punishment; it was due to injury.
And let’s not forget the nightmare week United endured, including a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Newcastle that ended their League Cup dreams.
The game had its moments, including a disallowed goal that involved VAR scrutiny lasting an eternity. Scott McTominay was trying to keep the flames alive for Ten Hag, but an offside Harry Maguire extinguished that hope.
United’s attack seemed blunter than a butter knife, and even an £87 million winger, Antony, was benched for his lackluster show.
Fulham, too, has been struggling to find the net since losing Aleksandar Mitrovic to Saudi Arabia. They’ve managed just nine goals in 11 games.
It was a game of missed opportunities for Fulham in the second half, with their goalkeeper Andre Onana playing a pivotal role, parrying away shots from Harry Wilson and Joao Palhinha.
But then came the dramatic stoppage time, and Fulham, in a moment of self-sabotage, handed United the win. Palhinha’s inability to clear the ball allowed Fernandes to be the hero of the hour.
Fernandes had been a major target for criticism during the team’s disastrous start to the campaign. For now, at least, Manchester United fans can rest easier knowing they won this game. Sleep well, Red Devils supporters!
