Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag after a dismal start to the season saw the team lie 14th in the Premier League after nine games. The final nail in the coffin came in the shape of a 2-1 defeat to West Ham, with a controversial late penalty slotted home by Jarrod Bowen condemning United to a fourth defeat of the season.

United issued a short statement, saying, “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.” Ten Hag’s departure comes amid growing frustration among supporters and club hierarchy alike as inconsistent performances and underwhelming results have seen any early optimism dissipate.
Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed interim head coach, along with the current coaching staff, until a permanent successor is found. That temporary promotion of Van Nistelrooy is a huge change as the club have searched for some stability and an upturn in fortunes across a torrid period. United will waste no time in seeking his replacement and juggling their fortunes to get their season back up and running.
