The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, has said that it would resume its suspended strike in the shipping sector of the nation’s economy from Monday, October 30.

Mr Adewale Adeyanju, the President-General had in a statement released to the public through the Union’s Head of Media, Mr John Kennedy Ikemefuna, stated that the directive had become necessary due to the unwillingness of the shipping companies’ representative to negotiate a minimum standard condition of service for the sector.

Adeyanju had said, “A technical committee including the union and shipping employers were also inaugurated by the minister to coordinate the union’s demands but after three meetings, they could not resolve the protracted Minimum Standard Condition of Service issue with the union.”

“It is worthy to also note that when a truce was almost in sight, the representatives of the shipping employers at the negotiation table began to develop an unenthusiastic attitude toward the entire exercise,” He further added.

The shipping branch of the union would resume the suspended indefinite action throughout the nation’s port formations after the termination of the renewed seven-day ultimatum issued.

The other three branches of the union: Nigerian Ports Authority, dockworkers, and the seafarers will join their colleagues in the strike action in solidarity”, according to Adeyanju.

Recall that the former Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo’s intervention had led to the suspension of the indefinite strike action previously scheduled for June 5.
