Five people were killed in a mass shooting at Bangkok’s Or Tor Kor Market, a well-known hub for high-quality fresh fruit and seafood, Thai police confirmed. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, is also dead following the attack. Local media reports indicate that some of the victims were security guards, though authorities have not yet released an official breakdown of casualties.

The Or Tor Kor Market, one of Bangkok’s most frequented fresh food destinations, was thrown into chaos as gunfire erupted, sending shoppers and vendors fleeing. Police are investigating the motive behind the shooting, which has reignited concerns about gun violence in Thailand, where firearm ownership rates are among the highest in Southeast Asia.

Thailand’s Troubling Trend of Mass Shootings

While mass shootings remain relatively rare in Thailand, the country has witnessed several high-profile attacks in recent years. In 2023, a 14-year-old boy opened fire inside a luxury Bangkok shopping mall, killing two people and injuring five others. Just a year earlier, in October 2022, a former policeman carried out one of Thailand’s deadliest massacres, murdering 37 people—mostly children—at a childcare center in Nong Bua Lamphu province.

The 2020 Nakhon Ratchasima shooting further highlighted the country’s struggle with gun violence when a soldier killed 29 people in a rampage. These incidents have sparked debates over Thailand’s gun laws, which, despite strict regulations, still see firearms circulating due to illegal sales and lax enforcement in certain areas.

How Common Are Gun Crimes in Thailand?

Thailand has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in the region, with an estimated 10 million firearms in circulation—many of them unregistered. While violent crime involving guns is not an everyday occurrence, the recent spate of mass shootings has raised alarms. Experts point to mental health crises, personal vendettas, and systemic loopholes in gun control as contributing factors.

The Or Tor Kor Market shooting, though not as deadly as past attacks, underscores the unpredictable nature of such violence. Authorities are now under pressure to tighten firearm regulations and improve security in public spaces, particularly crowded markets and transport hubs.

Why It Matters

In the wake of the shooting, Bangkok officials are expected to review safety protocols at major markets and shopping centers. The Or Tor Kor Market, a key tourist and local shopping spot, may see increased police patrols or surveillance upgrades. Meanwhile, Thailand’s government faces renewed calls to address illegal gun trafficking and enhance mental health support to prevent future tragedies.
