Introducing our esteemed guest for today’s interview – the multi-talented Chika Charles

Chika Charles is not just a filmmaker; she’s a visionary who believes in the power of African millennials and generations to come, poised to make a significant impact on society and the world. Her journey into the Nigerian film industry is one fueled by passion, determination, and a profound love for storytelling.

Working alongside industry giants like Uche Mbunabo and Ivie Okujaye, Chika served as the script supervisor for the popular movie “Treasure in the Sky,” which amassed over 10 million views on YouTube. As an assistant director, she collaborated with renowned figures like Mercy Johnson Okojie, showcasing her versatility and dedication to her craft. Chika Charles is indeed a rising star, poised to illuminate the Nigerian film industry with her talent and passion.

Chika’s Journey into Filmmaking:

Question: How did your journey into the Nigerian film industry begin, and what sparked your initial interest in filmmaking?

Chika’s Response: My journey started way back in childhood – I was just a young, passionate girl with a big dream. I found so much joy in acting out dramas and making home movies with my siblings. The magic of filmmaking always fascinated me, and I knew deep down that it was where I belonged. Officially, my journey in the industry began in 2018.

Lessons Learned and Advice for Newcomers:

Question: With your experience working alongside top Nollywood producers and contributing to successful projects like “Treasure in the Sky” and “Dorcas the Prophetess,” what lessons have you learned that you believe are crucial for newcomers entering the industry?

Chika’s Response: First off, let’s talk heart-to-heart. If you’re stepping into this industry, remember you’re dealing with real people – with their quirks, dreams, and stories. How you connect, manage, and show patience with them makes all the difference. On set, you’ll encounter a colorful mix of personalities, so empathy and understanding go a long way. And hey, let’s talk about consistency. It’s not just about putting in the hours; it’s about showing up, giving your best, and never giving up on your dreams. Oh, and attention to detail? It’s like adding sprinkles to the cake – it makes you stand out. Lastly, don’t forget to listen. Everyone has a story to tell, and sometimes, the best ideas come from unexpected places.

Aspirations and Collaborations:

Question: Are there any specific filmmakers or industry professionals, such as Kunle Afolayan, that you aspire to collaborate with in the future? If so, what draws you to their work?

Chika’s Response: There’s someone in this industry whom I truly admire and hope to work with someday – Funke Akindele. Her resilience, hard work, and journey from actress to becoming a renowned film director inspire me greatly.

Balancing Multiple Roles:

Question: As someone who wears multiple hats in the filmmaking process, from script supervision to assistant directing, how do you balance these different roles, and what strategies do you employ to ensure each aspect receives adequate attention and detail?

Chika’s Response: Every film set is a unique blend of personalities, so there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. However, the core values and principles remain steadfast across all sets. It’s essential to employ the strategies I mentioned earlier, especially focusing on your ability to connect with and understand people on a personal level. Being open to ideas and advice from anyone on set, regardless of their role, is key to personal and professional growth. And when it comes to preparation, it’s something I take very seriously. No matter how tight the deadline, I always make sure to thoroughly study the script and grasp the story. Writers occasionally make mistakes, and it’s my understanding of the narrative that enables me to catch these errors and contribute to fixing them on set.

Formal Education and Training:

Question: In addition to your practical experience, have you pursued any formal education or training in filmmaking? If so, how has this education enhanced your skills and contributed to your growth as a filmmaker?

Chika’s Response: I haven’t had the chance to pursue it yet. But I’m eager to learn, whether it’s through online research or hands-on experience on set. Because in the end, that’s where the real magic of filmmaking happens – in the hustle and bustle of creating something extraordinary with a team of passionate individuals.

Conclusion:

That wraps up our interview with the incredible Chika Charles. Her journey and insights serve as a beacon of inspiration for all aspiring filmmakers out there. Let’s harness her wisdom and drive to propel ourselves towards greatness in the world of cinema.
