Lionel Messi’s awaited trip to India during his “GOAT Tour” was marred by disorder among the crowd in Kolkata when supporters grew frustrated over his brief presence at a crowded stadium.
The Argentine icon came to India for a sequence of activities in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. His journey started in Kolkata with the inauguration of a 70-foot statue created in his honor, which was constructed over 27 days by a team of 45 people. Because of safety issues, Messi participated virtually in the unveiling, lowering the hopes of fans who had come from all over the nation.

At Salt Lake Stadium, millions assembled wearing Argentina jerseys, loudly cheering Messi’s name. Joined by Inter Miami teammate Luis Suárez and Argentina midfielder Rodrigo de Paul, Messi gave a wave to the crowd before the event was cut short. Supporters had anticipated an exhibition game featuring the eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient. The match was never played.
The sudden pending angered fury in parts of the audience with some forcefully making their way onto the field and destroying banners, tents, and chairs. Many fans mentioned they had to spend between ₹5,000 and ₹12,000 on tickets, calling the event disappointing.
Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister, announced an investigation and apologized to Messi and football enthusiasts. The police arrested the organizers, and officials initiated talks regarding potential ticket repayments. The All India Football Federation disassociated itself, asserting it had no connection to the event.
