In a recent development, Meta, which is the parent company of Facebook, has banned several Russian state media agencies globally, citing their use of deceptive strategies to influence the public and not be detected on its platforms. After thoughtful consideration, Meta broadened its restriction on Russia’s state-owned media outlets. As a result, Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and other related entities are now banned from the Meta apps worldwide for international interference activities.
Responding to this was Eunan O’Neill, an RT newsreader, who dismissed those claims, saying that Russia as a whole denies these accusations that have been made against this channel and other channels over the past few days. On his part, the Russian embassy in Washington and Rossiya Segodnya, owner of Sputnik news agency, haven’t commented yet. The ban is expected to take effect within a few days.
Accumulating scrutiny has been directed towards Russian state media outlets due to allegations relating to trying to manipulate Western politics. This is just one step further for Meta in its crackdown on them; it had previously restricted the ability of Russian state-controlled media to advertise or reach people through message contents back in 2022.
Recently, America accused RT for having paid $10 million to a firm located in Tennessee so that they would create and distribute materials containing concealed messages from the Russian government
