Morocco has started delivering a substantial 40 tons of medical aid to Palestinians in war-torn Gaza. This humanitarian effort, announced by the Moroccan foreign ministry on Monday, includes crucial surgical equipment, burn and fracture treatment supplies, and children’s medicine.

What They Are Saying

The aid, transported by air, is set to be handed over to Palestinian Red Crescent trucks at the Kerem Shalom border crossing, a senior diplomatic source disclosed to Reuters. Notably, this is the second time Morocco has used this crossing for aid deliveries, the first being in March.

Moroccan officials proudly claim that they are leveraging their diplomatic relations with Israel to foster peace and uphold Palestinian rights. However, this stance has sparked widespread protests across Moroccan cities, with many citizens vehemently opposing any ties with Israel since the conflict erupted in Gaza.

Why It Matters

The current Israeli offensive in Gaza, a response to the deadly October 7 incursion by Hamas-led militants into southern Israel, has resulted in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and more than 250 hostages taken, according to Israeli reports. The ensuing Israeli ground and air assault has tragically claimed the lives of over 37,600 Palestinians and left much of Gaza in ruins, Palestinian health authorities report.

Bottom Line

While Morocco attempts to navigate its complex political landscape and international relations, the humanitarian aid mission underscores the kingdom’s commitment to addressing the dire needs of Gaza’s population amidst a devastating conflict.
