Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced a landmark partnership with Elon Musk’s xAI that will integrate the Grok artificial intelligence assistant into the encrypted messaging app.
The one-year agreement includes $300 million in cash and equity for Telegram, plus 50% revenue share from xAI subscriptions sold through the platform. Durov celebrated the deal on social media, proclaiming “Together, we win!” as Telegram prepares to distribute Grok to its global user base exceeding one billion.
Messaging Apps Hurry to Adopt AI Features
The move follows Meta’s controversial integration of AI into WhatsApp, reflecting an industry-wide push to embed artificial intelligence into communication platforms.
Media analyst Hanna Kahlert of Midia Research notes this represents the accelerating convergence of social platforms and AI, though questions remain about user demand. “Adding AI into direct messaging inherently supplants [human interaction],” Kahlert told BBC News, warning it could erode trust in personal communications.
This partnership unites two of tech’s most polarizing figures. Durov faces ongoing scrutiny over Telegram’s moderation policies, including recent arrests in France related to platform criminality allegations.
Musk continues expanding his AI ambitions through xAI while maintaining roles at Neuralink, SpaceX, and his troubled $80 billion acquisition of X (formerly Twitter). The Tesla CEO’s political campaigning for Donald Trump has reportedly impacted electric vehicle sales amid consumer backlash.
Elon Musk’s AI Empire Pursuits Amid OpenAI Feud
Musk’s xAI venture comes after from his bitter split with OpenAI, which he co-founded before clashing with CEO Sam Altman over the company’s direction. After failing to acquire OpenAI earlier this year, Musk has positioned xAI and Grok as alternatives to ChatGPT, leveraging his ownership of X to distribute AI capabilities. The Telegram deal significantly expands xAI’s reach beyond social media into private messaging.
There are questions, however, over how Telegram will reconcile its encrypted messaging ethos with AI integration, particularly given Durov’s past resistance to content moderation.
Critics have labeled Telegram the “dark web in your pocket” due to illicit activity on its channels. The Grok partnership may test user trust as AI begins processing private conversations, with revenue-sharing incentives potentially influencing platform governance.
