Caleb Mutfwang, the governor of Plateau State, has denied the rumours that he is planning to leave the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming that they are completely untrue.
It was found that the governor had billboards bearing the APC insignia visible in Benin, the capital of Edo State, and there were widespread suspicions in Plateau State that the governor would soon defect and join the APC.
However, Mutfwang responded in a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, as follows:
“The attention of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has been drawn to a misleading social media post circulating a designed electronic flex banner featuring his image, falsely implying his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).The banner was claimed to have been mounted in Edo State for an unknown purpose.
The deliberate fabrication, masterfully devised by select individuals and skilfully carried out by rogue elements, seeks to sow discord between the Governor and the PDP’s leadership and his ardent Plateau State followers.
Even if there is no need for a formal reaction to this unfounded rumour, it has become imperative to clear up any misunderstandings that can mislead the public and protect the Governor’s reputation.
“Governor Mutfwang is a dedicated PDP member who strongly supports the party’s beliefs and the faith placed in him by the people of Plateau State, who massively elected him in the 2023 elections under the PDP banner.
Guided by his faith and conviction in divine providence, the Governor recognises that Plateau State residents view the PDP as a reliable political platform for leadership.
“The suggestion that he considered quitting the PDP for the APC is completely incorrect, and the Governor confirms that he has never discussed switching political parties with anyone.
The public is asked to overlook the acts of these adversaries, whose main purpose is to damage the Governor’s name for personal political advantage.”
He clarified: “Governor Mutfwang has not authorised anyone to create or circulate any such flex banner, and he remains steadfast in his commitment to the PDP and the people of Plateau State hence the fabricated story is the work of those who do not wish the State well, and the public is strongly advised to dismiss it and refrain from sharing the false information further.”
In Essence
The spread of false information, especially via social media, can be damaging in the Nigerian political context, as it often fuels unnecessary tension and speculation.
By addressing the issue promptly, Mutfwang not only reinforces his loyalty but also seeks to maintain the trust of his constituents.
His reference to the rumor as a deliberate attempt to sow discord suggests the presence of political adversaries who may be trying to destabilize his administration or discredit his leadership.
The appearance of billboards with the APC insignia, especially in a distant state like Edo, raises questions about the extent to which political misinformation can be used as a tool for creating division.
Mutfwang’s assertion that he never entertained discussions about defecting highlights his focus on maintaining unity within the PDP and ensuring the people of Plateau State can continue to rely on him for stable governance.
