The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has officially summoned Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, known as Speed Darlington, over a disturbing video in which he claimed to have had sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl. The agency said this confession could amount to a violation of federal laws prohibiting child abuse and human trafficking.
NAPTIP made the summons public on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, stating that the viral footage, alongside archived videos containing similar confessions and vulgar remarks about minors, had triggered the action. The statement warned: “Failure to respond may lead to further action.”
NAPTIP Summons Speed Darlington After Public Outrage
In the video, Speed Darlington clearly said he had been with a minor. After facing heavy backlash online, the singer later backtracked and claimed it was all a marketing tactic for his new song. He issued a casual apology but failed to withdraw the original statement fully.
NAPTIP has now made it clear that the matter is not one to be waved off. According to the invitation letter dated May 28, 2025, the singer is to appear at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on May 30, 2025, for questioning regarding his admissions.
The agency added that such confessions, if proven true, violate the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015, as well as sections of the Cybercrime Act 2015.
NAPTIP Summons Speed Darlington Amid Legal Threats
In its formal letter, NAPTIP stressed that “these actions, if substantiated, constitute offences under Nigerian law.” The agency further instructed the singer to appear in person and bring along any legal representation or documents. They made it clear that non-compliance would lead to legal consequences.
NAPTIP’s action comes after the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) referred the case to the federal agency due to the sensitive nature of the claims made in the video. Meanwhile, the public continues to question why a celebrity would make such a harmful claim, even as a “publicity stunt.”
NAPTIP Summons Speed Darlington Over Shocking Claim
The fact that NAPTIP summoned Speed Darlington over this issue shows that authorities are beginning to clamp down on public figures who use serious crimes as bait for attention. Whether the singer shows up on May 30 or not, the issue has opened up uncomfortable questions about how far entertainers are willing to go just to stay relevant.
By making such statements, even if as “jokes” —Speed Darlington has not only put his career at risk but has also potentially committed a crime. And now, NAPTIP is taking steps to hold him accountable.
