Arsenal’s problems in the Premier League continued as the Gunners fell 1-0 to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park to extend the winless streak to three games. Newcastle’s recent rise thanks to an EFL Cup win against Chelsea saw them carrying into a confident performance against a faltering Arsenal.
The Magpies were the first to strike early on through Anthony Gordon, who provided an inch-perfect cross that Alexander Isak met powerfully, beating David Raya with a firm header inside 15 minutes.
Still without captain Martin Ødegaard, Arsenal toiled to fashion clear opportunities. Bukayo Saka came closest with a near-post header skimming wide, while Newcastle did enough to suggest this would remain tight as the first half ended with the hosts ahead.
The second half was all Arsenal in terms of possession, but without a serious threaten on Newcastle’s back. Joe Willock almost made it two for Newcastle, and Raya was into work to save a fierce shot by Isak. Mikel Arteta introduced young Ethan Nwaneri to spark Arsenal’s attack, but it hardly felt the impact it had on the pitch as Newcastle held firm.
That result marked the first win that helped Newcastle end a six-match winless league streak, while Arsenal’s title hopes have taken a beating, with Manchester City and Liverpool ready to widen the gap at the top.
