Bournemouth managed to end a 14-game losing streak in the Premier League against Manchester City with a historic 2-1 victory at the Vitality Stadium, handing Pep Guardiola’s side their first league loss of the season and ceding the top spot to Liverpool.
The Cherries struck early, with Milos Kerkez finding Antoine Semenyo in the box, and with a quick control, he finally finished to put Bournemouth ahead inside the opening 10 minutes. City struggled to respond with no on-target shots in the first half, with Erling Haaland nursing a knock.
City’s Phil Foden missed a golden chance shortly after the break, firing wide after the lay-off from Matheus Nunes. Bournemouth then made much of it minutes later, as the pinpoint cross by Kerkez was met by Evanilson, doubling the advantage.
A strike off the post from Marcus Tavernier nearly made it three and, although Joško Gvardiol’s late header offered City hope, the champions couldn’t find an equalizer during stoppage time. Eventually, Bournemouth’s firm backline earned a memorable win that sent City a long way off kilter in the title chase, while Liverpool took control at the top.
