Nigeria has once again plunged into darkness following another collapse of the national grid. The incident, which occurred at approximately 2:09 pm on Tuesday, was confirmed by the official X handle of the National Nigeria Grid.
Frequent Power Outages Raise Concerns
This marks at least the eighth grid collapse in 2024 alone. Just recently, nine northern states experienced a blackout following a similar collapse, highlighting the frequency and severity of these disruptions. The recurrent power failures have sparked nationwide frustration and raised concerns about the resilience of the national grid.
EEDC Alerts Customers in the Southeast
Following Tuesday’s collapse, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) notified its customers about the blackout. Emeka Ezeh, EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, announced that the system collapse at 1:52 pm has led to a total loss of supply across the EEDC network, impacting customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo states.
“We are currently awaiting further details from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo regarding the cause and timeline for restoring power,” Ezeh added.
Calls for Solutions to Persistent Grid Failures
The repeated collapses of the national grid have prompted Nigerians to ask critical questions: What is causing these ongoing failures? Why can’t the grid sustain a reliable power supply? Many are hoping that authorities will not only provide clear answers but also work toward a permanent solution to prevent further blackouts.
